Producer Cameron Mackintosh was severely jet-lagged when he arrived on an overnight flight from New York at Heathrow at 9 am on Monday. But he was at Her Majesty's by 10 am.

Not only could he satisfy himself with the progress on Phantom but his 48-hour trip to New York had cleared Equity problems about Les Miserables going to Broadway next year and brought the welcome news that there is already a 3,000,000 dollar advance at the box office.

By February's opening there, it is likely to be a 10,000,000 dollar advance - a Broadway record.

Mackintosh said: "If it breaks through in New York then it will go world wide. There are 25 countries pencilled for it at the moment".
