Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few questions that I'm often asked about participating in the Global Challenge.

Why did you sign up to become a crew volunteer?

I think that it's an exciting and adventurous way to travel and visit different countries, and I'm looking forward to meeting people and learning new skills, particularly sailing in a competitive team environment. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that will test me to my limits, physically and mentally, and also a tremendous achievement that will give me some extraordinary memories - and stories to bore my friends and family with!

How are you raising the berth fee?

Mostly through personal savings, selling my car, and fundraising through Supporters. I shall also be fundraising for the official charity Save the Children.

Are you worried about seasickness?

Yes and no, I'm not looking forward to being ill, but I hope that it passes quickly! I hear that you get used to it and 'gain your sea legs' after a few days ...

Will you be able to send email from the yacht during the race?

With regard to personal email, probably not, although the occasional rare message may find it's way out! Use of the satellite communications systems may be restricted, and also the cost of calls is expensive. It could even distract crews from the racing!
