Fundraising
I shall be helping to raise money for the official race charity,
Save the Children.
Please email
me if you would like to receive details about my fundraising
for Save the Children, or make
a donation online.
Amount raised for Save the Children to date: £930
The Global Challenge Races have generated over £2 million for
the international charity since the event began in 1989, with
over £1 million raised through the BT Global Challenge 2000/01
alone.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, President of Save the
Children is also Patron of the Global Challenge races, organised
by Sir Chay Blyth’s Challenge Business.
Since the last race, the funds raised have been used to support
Save the Children’s long-term projects for health, education and
poverty relief around the world, working towards creating a healthy,
happy, secure future for the world’s children.
During the previous challenge the Crew Volunteers ran fundraising
activities in countries as far away as Canada and Borneo, New
Zealand and Sweden. Along the race route, money was raised for
Save the Children in each port of call and funds collected were
used by the local Save the Children office to support their local
projects.
Sponsors of the race – during the BT Global Challenge 2000/01
these totaled more than 150 – were also a key part of the fund-raising
efforts, with Serco, one of the yacht sponsors, allowing it’s
yacht to be liveried with Save the Children’s branding.
This not only increased public awareness of the issues facing
children around the world, but it also improves international
relations by uniting Britain with other countries in a common
cause.
Mr. Kim Darton, Head of Corporate Fundraising for Save the Children
comments: “Save the Children has been very fortunate to be the
charity benefiting from the Challenge races and so far, over £2
million pounds have been raised in support of our vital work.
We are very proud to have been chosen as the official race charity
of the Global Challenge 2004 and are looking forward to working
with Challenge Business, their sponsors and the Crew Volunteers
to make this race a huge success for the communities we work in
around the world.”
In the past, the Global Challenge Races have given Crew Volunteers
an opportunity to increase their own awareness of the work of
Save the Children by visiting projects along the race route. “In
Buenos Aires, we visited four schools where Save the Children
provides support for local people to set up schools for children
from some of the poorest areas... I will certainly never forget
what it was like to witness first hand, something that we normally
only see on the TV from the comfort of our own homes,” said Neil
Gray, Serco Legger, Save the Children.
Simon Walker, Managing Director, Challenge Business comments:
“Challenge Business decided to support the efforts of Save the
Children once again as we feel it is one of the most beneficial
charities there are helping thousands of children around the world,
by tackling core issues such as child rights and the eradication
of poverty.
“Fundraising for Save the Children also adds another dimension
to the ‘challenge’ element of The Global Challenge for all those
involved. “Crew Volunteers will not only be motivated and united
in their goal to win the race, but they will also be focused as
a team towards raising money and awareness for the charity”.
