BT Global Challenge 2000-1 Race Finish

On Saturday, 30th June, the BT Global Challenge yachts arrived in Southampton after their ten-month voyage around the world. I joined the thousands of spectators at Ocean Village to welcome them home, soak up the atmosphere, and get my first look at these amazing boats.

Live coverage of the race finish was displayed on a large screen in the village, showing the impressive sight of the leading yachts crossing the line surrounded by a flotilla of supporters. Shortly afterwards each yacht jubilantly motored into the marina to the cheering of the crowds, with Sir Chay Blyth on hand to douse the crews with champagne!

Families were soon emotionally reunited, and the crews were able to celebrate the completion of their 30,000 mile circumnavigation and adventure of a lifetime.
