BG SPIRIT Teambuilding
Friday-Sunday, 13-15 February 2004
It was going to be an exciting Valentines weekend away - an opportunity
to get to know each other a little better, stroll along soft sandy
beaches, and dance the night away after a romantic candlelight
dinner for 21 people ...!
We gathered for our first BG Spirit teambuilding weekend at Hayling
Island Sailing Club on the Friday night, and as customary at such
events, started to get acquainted over a few drinks while the
remainder of the group arrived.
On Saturday morning we kicked off the teambuilding activities
with a round of introductions, then discussed our objectives for
the race, including our reasons for taking part, what we wanted
to get out of the experience, together with our hopes and fears.
It was good to see that everyone was keen to race competitively,
yet safely, and to make the Global Challenge adventure an enjoyable
one.
During the afternoon we played touch rugby on the beach, which
progressively got rougher with someone ending up with a black
eye, and a tackle that landed a couple of guys in the sea.

Feeling a little weary after Saturday evening's dinner and dancing,
we resumed our discussions the following morning, refining the
team's objectives and mission statement, and also dealt with other
important issues, such as how conflicts should be addressed throughout
the race.
As the weekend drew to a close, I felt reassured that BG SPIRIT
has a fantastic team of people, with a diverse and enthusiastic
core crew taking part in the entire race, together with inspiring
and committed leggers from BG Group, who have been involved right
from the beginning. It is also becoming more apparent that now
we are in our teams, there is an incredible amount to organise
before the race starts, and regular get-togethers will be key
to building a fully-prepared, well-bonded and successful racing
team.
